September 2004: SABIRABAD, Azerbaijan, – 10-year-old Ismail Agayev and his mother Gultekin, aged 32, in their home at the Galagayin settlement for IDPs in Sabirabad, 180 km south of the capital Baku. More than 1,900 IDP families, who fled their homes as a result of the Ngorno-Karabakh conflict, live in the settlement. Around 800,000 people are internally displaced. Ismail’s parents came to Sabirabad from Fizuli in 1994. The boy was born in the settlement that he calls ‘home’.

September 2004: SABIRABAD, Azerbaijan - Babek, aged 13, and Beyrek, aged 10, with their mother Tarlan (38) at their temporary home in Galagayin settlement for IDPs in Sabirabad, 180 km south from the capital Baku. Babek, a 5th grade student, and Beyrek, a 3rd grade student, both go to a school for IDP children in the camp.

Azerbaijan, 2004: 13-year old Zohra Mamedova, left, lives with about 150 other children in a boarding school in Sheki, 330 km north west of the capital, Baku. Her parents divorced three years ago. "My father lives in Russia," she says. "I pray that one day when he becomes rich, my Dad will take me out of here." UNICEF is working with the carers at the School to help them make the transition to family-based care for the children. There are more than 27,000 children in institutions in Azerbaijan -- more than half of them have living parents.
